When it comes to waste oil, Slicker Recycling are the market leaders. We provide our customers with expert advice on how to store, manage and dispose of their waste oil responsibly.
Below is a list of frequently asked questions we often receive from customers:
What types of waste oil do you collect?
We collect all types of mineral oil including gearbox oil, lubricating oil, electrical insulation oils, and many more.
How can waste oil affect the environment if not properly dealt with?
If waste oil is not properly dealt with then it can build up and if spilled may cause contamination to the surrounding land.
What happens to waste oil?
Once we collect your oil, we will take it to one of our strategically located depots across the UK. From these locations, the oil is transported in bulk to our export site in Ipswich. The used oil is pumped onto a vessel and shipped to our specialist facility in Denmark to be re-refined into a high-quality base oil product, a key component in the production of new lubricating oils.
How is the oil collected?
Oil collection tankers will be sent to your location where our expert team will quickly and efficiently pump the oil from your storage into the tanker.
Why is it important to recycle waste oil?
There are several advantages to recycling your waste oil through our innovative Slicker Service, below are just a few:
- Slicker’s approach to recycling waste oil is to re-refine it into a base oil – a key component in the production of new lubricating oil. Compared to the alternative method, the production of Processed Fuel Oil (PFO), base oil re-refining is 37% more carbon efficient.
- Unlike PFO, which has an end life when it is burnt as a carbon-emitting fuel, base oil produced from waste oil can be done, again and again, contributing to the circular economy.
- The production of base oil using re-refined used oil is more carbon efficient than a base oil product made using crude oil. Compared to the crude oil equivalent, every 1,000 litres of used oil Slicker re-refines into base oil we save over 480kg of carbon, that’s approximately the same amount of carbon 19 trees absorb in a year!
- Crude Oil is a valuable finite resource, by re-refining used oil into base oil we can preserve the limited volumes we have left.
What is the maximum amount of oil I can get collected?
Slicker has no maximum limit to the volume of oil we will collect, however for cost efficiency we do have a minimum collection volume of 500 litres.
Is it illegal to burn waste oil?
To operate a small waste oil burner (SWOB) business must have a permit which can cost upwards of £3000 initially with yearly fees of over £1000. To remain compliant and cut costs and carbon we recommend the Slicker oil collection.
Can my oil collection be affected by the weather?
During the colder seasons, a collection may take longer if the waste oil is not stored correctly this is because as it cools its viscosity increases. The thicker oil doesn’t flow as easily through our pumps making it a longer process.
Can waste oil be stored outside?
We recommend that you don’t store waste oil outside, as it can become contaminated with rainwater. We can arrange a collection for contaminated waste however, this is more expensive as it will require a dedicated collection vehicle and more complex processing.
Do you offer a nationwide collection?
Yes! We offer a nationwide service to anyone across the mainland UK.
